WHERE I COME FROM
My family first came to Malibu in the 1950's and returned in the 1960's to live again. I was 18 months old while my family built the home that I am still living in today. I attended Pt. Dume (Malibu) elementary, Malibu Park Jr High (Malibu Middle) and Santa Monica High (SAMOHI). I was fortunate to have Pt. Dume headlands as my playground, I rode horses, learned to swim at Malibu Park Jr High, was a cheerleader for the Malibu Mustangs football team, played softball at the former Malibu Little league fields and many more Malibu adventures.
MY EXPERIENCE
I have worked for the City of Malibu since 2006. I worked in both the Planning Department and Environmental Sustainability Department, Building Safety Division. This has given me a front row seat to hearing and seeing what our residents care about and how they want to use their properties. It has also allowed me to learn our General Plan, Municipal Code and Local Coastal Plan and I have used that knowledge to help neighbors with their questions about what the rules are in the City of Malibu.
As a parent I have volunteered as Girl Scouts parent leader, team mom of several sports, Malibu High School Athletic Booster Club member and in 2012-13 I served as the President of the club. I have served on the SMMUSD Bond Oversight Committee and I am currently a member of the Facility District Advisory Committee (FDAC) for SMMUSD which focuses on facility improvements for Malibu public schools.
Additionally, I have supported the creation of community sport facilities. In 2018 the City of Malibu purchased several lots throughout the city. I have advocated to have much of this land used to provide our community much needed recreational facilities. I believe our community needs a community swimming pool, the completion of the permanent skate park, and other multi use fields and facilities. It is time for our community to come together and determine how we want this land used.
MISSION STATEMENT
Malibu's Hometown Girl with Experience
There are few people in Malibu that understand what it means to grow up, raise a family, and care for an elderly parent in Malibu. I do. I understand what the Malibu Way of Life truly means and understand the importance of our community. I am asking for your vote so that I can take my years of community service and involvement in our community to a higher level. My goals as a city council member will be to bring the residents of Malibu much needed community recreation facilities like a swimming pool that can be accessed at all times during the day, not just after school hours. I will continue pursuing the creation of a Malibu Unified School District so that the residents of Malibu can make the important decisions about our local schools. I feel strongly about providing a place for our residents to gather to enjoy cultural events as a community. I will work hard to ensure that our government is fiscally responsible and maintains our high bond rating so we are able to be in a position to improve the lives of Malibu residents. I ask you to vote for Marianne Riggins for Malibu City Council.
